NATURE OF THE POSITION

In 2015 the District of Sechelt commissioned one of the most innovative and advanced LEED certified wastewater treatment plants in Canada – The Sechelt Water Resource Centre.  This is a state of the art, tertiary level, membrane filtration, wastewater treatment plant rated as a Class IV facility.   Life in Sechelt boasts a temperate West Coast climate, access to beautiful and varied land and marine environments, a wide range of community amenities and activities and a vibrant cultural scene. Residents enjoy outstanding “small town” quality of life with access to services both locally and via easy ferry access to BC’s Lower Mainland.


Under the direction of the Wastewater Chief Operator, the successful candidate will assist in operating the sewer treatment and collection system.

ESSENTIAL COMPETIENCIES

Applicants must have Grade 12 (or equivalent) and be certified by the BC EOCP as a Wastewater Treatment Operator Level II or III (or inter-provincial equivalent). Applicants that currently hold Level I – with the experience and ability to reach Level II within one year will also be considered.  Additionally, applicants must have one-year proven experience in all aspects of operating and maintaining wastewater treatment and collections system at a class III or higher wastewater treatment facility; hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License; and live within 30 minutes driving time of the Sechelt Water Resource Centre.
 

Applicants must have knowledge of confined space entry and WHMIS with the ability to receive valid certification. Applicants must have knowledge of biohazardous substances and experience in mechanical and electrical work related to sewer treatment installations. Applicants must have the ability to accurately record measurements into a database; analyze results; provide recommendations; establish and maintain effective working relations with others; lift, carry, push and pull heavy loads; and perform other physically demanding work.
 

Applicants must have a professional, responsive, and positive work attitude; the ability to remain calm in stressful situations; and the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully one-on-one or in a group environment.


 PREFERRED COMPETENCIES

Applicants with valid certification in confined space entry and WHMIS and formal biohazardous substances training are preferred.  EOCP certification in wastewater collection, or inter-provincial equivalent, is preferred. Post-secondary education in wastewater technology would be an asset.


 WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a permanent full-time, unionized position within the BCGEU. Wage for the position will vary based on the EOCP certification held; Level I: $30.67 – $34.08, Level  II: $33.24 – $36.93, Level III: $36.04 - $40.04 and Level IV $39.10- $43.45 per hour plus an attractive benefits package. Hours of work are 37.5 hours per week. Flexibility to respond to callouts on evenings and weekends is required.
