Introduction: 

Evergreen is currently seeking to add new voices to the recently formed Institute for Public Art and Sustainability (IPAS).

 

As an evolution of the Evergreen Public Art Program, IPAS supports and sustains public art for future generations, led by the values of resilience, environmental stewardship, re-indigenization and anticolonialism, and equity. Informed by Indigenous knowledges of interconnectivity and land as relation, IPAS works closely with its community and institutional partners to foster sustainability through both ecosystem and arts ecology.

 

We are seeking three Community Directors to contribute their unique skills and expertise to IPAS and Evergreen. Providing services as an Independent Contractor, the Community Director will guide and advise on existing activities to help shape the strategy and vision of the Institute and its programming into the future. Due to the specificity of this work, we hold this space for Black, Indigenous and racialized persons, and persons with disabilities, with gender and sexually diverse identities and/or the intersections of these identities.

IPAS will be steered by a non-hierarchical governance model of Community Directors who will seek to address systemic barriers in public art.

About the Role: 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generate new community leads and partnerships.
  • Liaise and consult with IPAS Community Directors and Evergreen staff on programming and initiatives.
  • Advise in the creation of mentorship opportunities and pathways to employment for Indigenous and racialized artists and arts workers.
  • Participate in IPAS events (workshops, storytelling circles, discussions) when available.
  • Specialize in one or more of the following areas: Indigenous knowledge, sustainability, public art, diversity/inclusion in art and the outdoors.
  • Convene with Community Directors bi-monthly to discuss IPAS activities and updates.
  • Disseminate IPAS themes, ideas and events through individual social networks.

About You: 

You have the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge and interest in land-based practices and initiatives across the arts and/or environmental sciences
  • Demonstrated experience prioritizing and elevating systemically excluded and under-supported individuals
  • Strong links to community networks and partners within the arts and/or environmental justice locally and beyond
  • Deep understanding of challenges faced in accessing and working in public spaces
  • Commitment to generating and maintaining solidarities across diverse cultural communities.

Other details: 

  • Main contact at Evergreen will be the Curator, Public Art
  • Community Directors will be available for 10 hours/month for advisement and consultation
  • Fees to be invoiced by contractor on a monthly basis; maximum of 10 hours/month at $100.00 per hour
  • Preferred contract start date, as soon as possible, for a 12-month period (with possibility for extension)
  • This position is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts Strategic Innovation Fund.
